How to Hire A Bookkeeper Questions to Ask: Do they have experience working with your version of QuickBooks?
In a prior post, I listed the 10 questions you should ask when hiring a bookkeeper or accountant. In this post, I’ll discuss the third question – do they have experience working with your version of QuickBooks?
Many bookkeepers and accountants are comfortable working with one or two versions of QuickBooks. Be sure to find out which versions of QuickBooks they work with. QuickBooks “Online” version is much different from QuickBooks Pro. QuickBooks Premier and QuickBooks Enterprise versions are more specialized and robust versions. You may not want to hire a bookkeeper who has experience in QuickBooks Pro to work on your QuickBooks Online. They may not be very efficient since they don’t know the “Online” version very well. They may also not know how to troubleshoot issues.
Ideally, you want to work with certified QuickBooks experts. Intuit, the maker of QuickBooks, certifies “Proadvisors”. Certified QuickBooks Proadvisors have passed tests to prove their QuickBooks knowledge. Certified Advanced Proadvisors have passed a very stringent test and have proven themselves as having extensive knowledge in both accounting and QuickBooks.
It’s important to also find out whether their certification is up to date. It’s possible that someone has been certified in an older version of QuickBooks and they have not renewed their certification.
Here is a list of questions to ask to find out whether they have experience with QuickBooks:
- Are you a certified QuickBooks Proadvisor?
- If so, which QuickBooks products are you certified in?
- Are your certifications up to date?
As I mentioned in a prior post, if they are certified in QuickBooks, you can look them up in the QuickBooks ProAdvisor website and you will easily be able to see what QuickBooks products and years they are certified in.

In my next post on How to hire a bookkeeper, I will cover the fourth question to ask when hiring a bookkeeper or accountant. Will they work on your QuickBooks file or do your bookkeeping on their own software?
