Hey, this is Veronica Wasek with another episode of BK Biz. What are the 7 things you should know before starting a bookkeeping business? The seven things you should know about bookkeeping business have to do with the fact that owning a bookkeeping business isn’t just about bookkeeping. There are a lot more skills and knowledge that you need to develop in order to have a successful bookkeeping business.

#1 – Marketing Skills

Number one, would be marketing skills. You need to learn how to make your business attractive to potential clients.

#2 – Sales

Number two, would be sales. You need to develop selling skills in order to attract your ideal clients and to be able to sell services to them successfully.

#3 – People Skills

Number three, is people skills. It’s not good enough to be good with numbers and to know all about accounting and bookkeeping. At the core of it all, we’re dealing with people who have real problems, and we need to be willing to listen to them so that we can explain things to them in very concise ways. We have to really be committed in helping our clients win.

#4 – Technical Knowledge

Number four, is technical knowledge. Above all, if you’re going to be a bookkeeper, you have to have bookkeeping knowledge. You have to get training in bookkeeping, and whether that is through a training course, through online resources, or even through hands-on experience working part-time for another bookkeeper or accountant.

#5 – Technology

Number five, would be knowledge about technology. What accounting app are you going to use? My preference is QuickBooks online. You might choose something else, you need to know it inside and out. Know how it works because it’s not good enough to just know bookkeeping. You also have to know how to work with a specific accounting software. Whether you’ll use Bill.com, Pluto, Expensify, Tally, or many other tools, to streamline your workflow, you need to develop your knowledge and expertise.

#6 – Workflows and Processes

Number six, is workflows and processes. You need to be able to track the work status and tasks for all of your clients, because each client’s work is at a different step. And I know this, because I started out with lots of yellow stickies and pieces of paper. But, ultimately the best way to track your workflows is to use a project management software. To help you do this, you can actually get a free project management software within QuickBooks Online Accountant.

#7 – Websites and Social Media

Number 7, would be websites and social media. One of the first things that I did when starting my bookkeeping business was became proficient in WordPress, which is the tool that I use to host my websites and my blog. This way, I wasn’t dependent on a website developer or someone else that I would then have to pay a lot of money to help me develop all of my websites and blog. So, one thing that I encourage you to learn about are websites and search engine optimization, so people can find you locally, throughout the United States, or throughout the world, depending on what your market is. So, how do you use social media to promote your business, make connections with other professionals, and to be attractive to other business owners?

Those are the seven things that you need to know to start your own bookkeeping business. If you like this video, be sure to Like it, leave a comment. Let me know where you are in your bookkeeping business journey, and subscribe to my channel so you can get all of the latest updates.
